BLOG 1

Hello! My name is Arielle Spivey, I am a senior biology major here at Southern, and will be graduating in May. On August 8 I married my husband, Gene, and am still getting used to my new last name! Following graduation, I hope to go on to dental school, and am currently applying to a couple different schools. I’d like to do general family dentistry. If that doesn’t pan out, then I’m not sure what I’ll be doing…maybe grad school? Either way, I know I’m ready to get out of Hattiesburg! When I’m not at school or home, I am working part-time as an administrative assistant (a.ka. secretary) at a small computer/networking business in Hattiesburg. Off and on, I job-shadow at a general dentistry office and an orthodontic office, and know for sure I don’t want to do orthodontics.
Being a science major, I have written numerous laboratory reports and summaries of peer-reviewed journal articles. Chemistry lab reports were by far the most frustrating to write, as there are so many symbols required that take a lot of time to put in.
At work, I frequently write invoices for goods and services provided, and write up faxes to customers and vendors. In our small office, with people in and out so frequently, e-mail is one of the primary ways we communicate with one another.
Luckily, writing has been one of my strengths, and I’ve done well with my academic reports. However, I think this class will broaden my range of writing abilities and improve my communication with others through written documents.
